Thank You Ann!

POSTED BY STEPHEN

Our team leader, Ann was formerly a GSE Team Member. We are lucky to have a team leader who was also once a team member. Ann has understood the process from the beginning in a way we could only learn. She also had the foundation to be able to adapt to our journey as we discovered the parts of each day that made our trip unique, challenging and special.

Ann is very dedicated to helping others. She has helped each of us in many ways throughout the trip- from being organized to trying to identify our individual needs. She has a warm heart and a lot of love she shares with the people around her.

In her presentation, Ann talks about volunteering at her local hospital as a clown to cheer up sick patients. Ann has definitely rubbed off a little on all of us....

THANK YOU ANN!

Today, the team visited the world famous Lamborghini factory and museum. INCREDIBLE.
Rotarians Alberto Farinetti (Modena) and Alberto Lasagni (Reggio Emilia) accompanied the group.

I stayed with Alberto Lasagni and his family earlier in the trip when we were in Reggio. It was terrific to see Alberto again!!

The Lamborghini story and various car designs are very interesting. We also managed to have some fun with our photos! (see below)

The wind made this a terrific picture!

9/11 Memorial... in Modena, Italy

Just down the street from the flat of my host family, there is a 9/11 Memorial. Alberto explained to me that following the tragic event, Modena acquired two pieces of the remains from the Twin Towers. These beams were then framed by a sculpture and placed in Modena to memorialize and remember 9/11.

5-27-10 Ferrari

This afternoon, we visited the home of the Ferrari Factory and Testing site.
It was great to tour the Ferrari Museum!

This Ferrari is more my speed (and possibly the only Ferrari I could ever afford)!

In the evening, we were guests at RC Modena Muratori Meeting.
Katia from the Italian GSE Team presented as well.

Vocational Day in Modena, Italy

POSTED BY STEPHEN

Dr. Alberto Benassi, Dr. Stefano Reggiani, and Stephen in Hesperia Hospital, Modena, Italy.

Vocational Day
Modena, Italy

Today, I visited two hospitals in Modena- one public and one private: Policlinico and Hesperia. The first hospital, Policlinico is Dr. Alberto Farinetti's hospital (our GSE Chair). I met 7 directors there! It was incredible. Each director's responsibilities overlapped mine in one way or another. I had the help of a wonderful young female translator, Anna. She is a linguistics PHD student arranged to assist me by Rotarian Giancarlo Gagliardeli.

Later in the afternoon, I visited Hesperia with Dr. Farinetti and met with 2 of the directors.

I haven't written much about the vocational days because I suspect that it would not be as interesting to those reading at home as much as the touristic pictures and info. However, I have to take the time today to say how happy I am about the overall vocational experience.

Interestingly, it really felt like all of the visits, conversations, interviews, and meetings all fit together today to form a beautiful picture. The cumulative experience really hit me at the end of the visit this afternoon. I am leaving this trip with such a rich understanding of how health care is handled in a unique way in a culture different from my day to day world. It's an amazing gift.

May 23-25. The first few days in Modena, Italy

POSTED BY STEPHEN

After three days in Modena, I can tell you that we are in love! In truth, it has been easy to fall in love with every city in Italy. (just ask Suzy!) Each city we have visited has been very unique and beautiful. Also, we have met the most amazing people at each stop.

Modena is no exception. We have finally met up with Alberto Farinetti, the GSE Chair and coordinator for the Italian RC District 2070. Alberto is responsible for the oversight of our entire program. He has clearly worked very hard on making sure we have had an incredible trip. It is a pleasure to meet him and spend the week in his hometown.

On sunday, Alberto welcomed the team into his lovely countryside home. It was a beautiful day! We spent the day sharing a wonderful meal and lots of sunshine with all of the host families. As the afternoon drew to a close, Alberto briefed the team on the itinerary for the week. The program he put together is fantastic! I cannot say enough about his enthusiasm, dedication to GSE, and kindness. We are very lucky to have him as the GSE Chair!

Alberto has a beautiful horse farm in the country. We enjoyed walking the property on just a perfect afternoon. From left to right: Alberto, his nephew Guido, his son Andrea, Ann, Stephen, Susan, and Susan's host Paola.

The Farinetti horses are beautiful. I am looking forward to sharing the pictures with my sister, Kristal. She has two horses. My sister and 8 year old nephew both enjoy horseback riding.

Monday 5-24

On Monday, we were given a great tour of Modena by Architect Emilio Montessori and Professor GianCarlo Gagliardelo. Both rotarians were extremely knowledgeable and interesting!
Tuesday, 5-25

Organized by RC, the team toured the Alcisa pork processing plant in Bologna, Italy where they make Mortadella. Morgan is posing in this photo in the nifty threads they provided to us. the tour was very interesting and fun.

Later in the day, we visited the Tizzano Winery. Although we enjoyed a terrific tasting, Susan found great glee in the clever advertizing on the sugar packets. :-) Suzy is focusing on taking a picture of the various wine bottles.

In the picture above, the team is posing with the winery owner and Rotarians who arranged for the trip (and kindly bought wine gifts for each of us)!! The RC President posing with Suzy let us call him "Franky." (I am not sure if this was his nickname before today) He was extremely friendly and kind. Susan and I practiced out Italian with him during a car ride to Bologna University. I think our Italian is really more of a "Itanglish"!!!! Vut we keep trying and getting better each day!

The beautiful city of Bologna, Italy- Home of the first University.

This evening, we presented at the RC Modena. Held in a beautiful restaurant in Modena, the meeting was terrific. We enjoyed meeting the Italian District Goveroer, Mario Biraldi and his wife. We also got to see Drs. Giuseppe & Livia Albertini again. Guiseppe is the Assistant District Goveroer.

We were delighted to also see our Italian friends Katia and GianLucca again. Both were members of the GSE Italian team. We got to know them while they were in our district. It was awesome seeing them. We have now seen everyone from the GSE Italian team during our stay! Both teams will all be together again at the District Conference this upcoming weekend!

GianLucca presented on his GSE experience in our District 7630, made up of Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
So much more to say but this is pretty good update on the last few days!
Buona Notte!

Pictures from Reggio Emilia, Italy

This bread is very typical of Ferrara, Italy.

LOOK AT ALL OF THIS CHEESE. Visiting the Parmasean Cheese Farm in Reggio Emilia! The smell in the warehouse was out of this world!

We went up in the Bell Tower at St. Prospero.

Tri-Colore Museo in Reggio.

The beautiful countryside of Reggio Emilia.
We arrived in Modena yesterday and were greeted by Alberto Farinetti in a van with a large american flag inside. It made us feel very welcome. We then went to their country house and had a lovely picnic with our new host families and their children. It was a beautiful sunny day, the kids played soccer, we picked cherries and strawberries, and looked at the horses that Alberta trains. It was a very relaxing way to start our stay in Modena!!

Today we visited Modena with the help of Architect Emilio Montessori and Gian Carlo Gagliardelli. We saw churches in Modena and the Abbazia di Nonantola. Emilio was the architect that oversaw the restoration of the Abbazia, he worked on it for over twenty years. He was very passionate about the building and it made our visit very special

Tomorrow we are off to Bolgona by train and a presentation in Modena tomorrow night.
